The Advisory Council for English Language Schools (ACELS) was established in 1969 under the auspices of the Irish Department of Education & Science to control standards in EFL schools and organisations through an inspection/recognition scheme. ACELS administers the scheme which leads to School Recognition by the Department of Education & Science.

Before making a recommendation to the Department, providers must submit an application to ACELS who then inspection the organisation to ensure to adheres to the Council’s required standards. If the provider is found to be satisfactory, the Council will recommend recognition to the Department. This comprehensive inspection includes all areas relating to the management and academic standards of the organisation. It covers:

1. General Management and Administration
2. Academic Management
3. Teaching Performance
4. Social Programme/Student Welfare
5. Premises

Successful organisations receive a ‘seal of approval’ in the form of Department of Education and Science recognition. This enables them to:

1. Be placed on the Department of Education and Science’s Internationalisation Register as a provider of programmes for non-EU/EEA/ Swiss students to gain access to employment.
2. Market their organisation under ACELS
3. Use the ACELS standard in the promotional material
4. Join industry bodies such as MEI RELSA which markets the Irish EFL market internationally
5. Benefit from ACELS training and networking events
6. Have access to offer ACELS TEFL Teacher Training programme
